Tour available from 15/02/2020 to 30/06/2020
Where Italy meets France, the Alps fall into the sea. This journey combines Mediterranean flair with Alpine landscapes. Sometimes you walk on peaceful paths through dramatic alpine landscapes accompanied by the whistles of the marmots and the view sweeps from the highest mountains to the Ligurian Sea. Sometimes the path leads through sunny olive groves with a fantastic sea view. Or you do a wonderful hike through one of the most beautiful valleys on the French-Italian border. You will experience a sporty week on the sun-drenched Ligurian Riviera, where in addition to the active hiking, of course, all sorts of culinary surprises are offered.
Day 1: Welcome to Bordighera
Check-in at the booked hotel. On arrival you will receive a welcome kit with informations about the area, the walking routes and some tips for the upcoming days. It also includes all necessary vouchers for the tour.
In the early evening you will be welcomed with an aperitif in the garden of the hotel, before you enjoy the first delicious multi-course dinner prepared in the hotel.
Day 2: A tiny principality
In the mountains above Bordighera lies the nearly thousand-year-old principality of Seborga. As once a small Gallic village in Brittany resisted the Romans, the small village of Seborga in Liguria still insists on its independence from Rome and Italy. The municipality with 320 inhabitants has its own currency, its own passport, its own anthem and a prince who is elected for a certain time. This curiosity is your first destination today, which you can reach in just 30 minutes. After looking around the picturesque village, descend past mimosa and gorse bushes, always facing the sea and the coast, which are beautifully situated in front of you. The hike is the ideal starting point to get to know the surrounding area and the historic district of Bordighera – the end of the hike. Here you can stroll through the lively shopping streets and admire the noble villas of the 19th century. Finally, we recommend a visit to the beautiful garden “Pallanca”, which displays more than 3,000 exotic plants. From here you can reach the hotel in about 40 minutes.
Total walking time on this day: approx. 3 hours, 9 km, + 160 / -500 m
On this day you do not need a car, as you take the bus to Seborga and then hike back. You may also take a bus from the botanical garden to the hotel if you do not want to walk anymore.
Day 3: The Côte D’Azur
In the morning you drive to Eze-sur-Mer in France, on the Côte Azur. Here begins the famous Nietzsche path, where the German philosopher is said to have hiked during his stays in this area.
In about an hour you’ll reach the picturesque village of Eze on comfortable stairs climbing up through fragrant Mediterranean vegetation. Stroll through the winding streets and do not miss a visit to the beautiful exotic garden. Or would you prefer to visit a famous perfume factory?
If you have not done enough work out for today, we suggest continuing the hike uphill to Fort de la Revère. You will be rewarded for the hard ascent with a dream panorama, the view sweeps down to the town of Eze, the sea and far along the coast. Back in Eze Village, a regular bus will take you to the starting point of the hike, should you no longer wish to hike.
Total walking time on this day about 5 hours, 8 km, +/- 700 m
On this day you can travel by car or by train to the starting point of the hike.
Day 4: Olive groves and picturesque mountain villages
Today you can expect a strenuous tour, but it’s worth it. The mountain village of Rocchetta Nervina is located in the hinterland of the Riviera dei Fiori at 235 meters above sea level and it is the starting point of today’s hike. The path leads past a small chapel, over the river and then on a dirt road slowly north uphill. There are many beautiful views of Rocchetta and the valley of the Rio Barbaira. In warm temperatures, you can take a short swim stop in the Laghetti, which are small pools of the mountain river Barbaira. In the afternoon you reach Dolceacqua with the famous bridge over the Nervia, which already painted Claude Monet. Here we have prepared for you a taste of fine Rossese wine, a grape that thrives only in this area, often on extreme slopes. You should take some time to visit the picturesque town with its fortress and the ancient stone bridge.
Total walking time on this day: approx. 7 hours, 15 km, + 800 / -900 m
Today you will drive with your own car to the starting point of the hike.
Day 5: Dolce far niente!
This day can be thought of as a hiking break, so you can plan a visit to the Hanbury Gardens or simply relax on the beach. The dinner is at leisure.
or hike to Menton:
Like a huge amphitheater, the mountains surround the town of Menton on the border between Italy and France, just a stone’s throw from the Principality of Monaco. Menton is not only the easternmost town on the Côte d’Azur, but also the warmest, which is why it is also the place of citrus fruits. From here, the riverside path leads you through real natural landscapes around the rocky Cap Martin and allows good views of the Italian coast, but especially in the other direction: Monaco. In the park Cap Martin stand hundred-year-old olive trees that provide shade and you also can admire pine trees, myrtle, aloe and agaves. If you want, you can continue to Monaco, always along the coast. From there, you will find regular train and bus connections back to Menton or Bordighera.
Total walking time on this day: approx. 2-3 hours, 6.5 km, +/- 120 m
On this day you can travel by car or by train to the starting point of the hike.
Day 6: Excursion to Albenga & Varigotti
Today you drive to the neighboring province to Albenga – an ancient maritime republic. You hike a beautiful stretch of coast. From Noli, with its historic center, head up the coast along the historic pilgrimage route “Sentiero del Pellegrino” to Varigotti, a Moorish-looking little fishing village. On the way you have breathtaking views of the sea and come past olive groves, churches and ancient Saracen towers. On the way back to the hotel you should stop in Albenga. Here, you can enjoy a well-preserved old town with many small squares, nice cafes and shops. Worth seeing are the cathedral, the Roman Maritime Museum and the medieval towers, but you should taste the fine olive oil of this area, we have agreed for a visit to a manufacturer for you.
Total walking time on this day about 3 hours, 6 km, +/- 300 m
On this day you can travel by car or by train to the starting point of the hike. From Varigotti a bus takes you back to Noli, and from there by car or train on to Albenga.
Day 7: Through the valley of the Roya
Today you will do another hike which combines the French charm and the Italian zest for life! You drive across the border into France to Breil, a picturesque village in the French Alps, directly on the river Roya, which you will follow on this long and beautiful hike. Mostly the river snakes deep beneath you with his turquoise water and you can glimpse it through the foliage, sometimes you cross small tributaries on ancient stone bridges. The path is varied and leads through several picturesque villages, first in France and finally in Italy. You will cross olive groves, walk through secluded woods, past gardens or spectacular rock formations. Sometimes, the panorama takes your breath away – in the distance you can see the blue sea! Finally, you will reach the pilgrimage church at the entrance to the village of Airole.
Tonight, we would like to invite you to a special dinner in the historic center of Bordighera. Typical restaurants hide in the picturesque streets. We chose one that is known for its fine slow-food cuisine.
Total walking time on this day about 5 hours. 13 km, + 450 / -600
Today you will drive with your own car and train to the starting point of the hike
