Update about Vernazza and Monterosso
About 20 days after the terrible flood that hit the Cinque Terre with enormous damages in Vernazza and Monterosso, this is the situation about the works of clean up and restore in the two villages.
MONTEROSSO:
The clean-up and restoring works are going on in the village of Monterosso and they also seem in a very advanced condition. Surely, the situation in Monterosso is better than in Vernazza.
The village of Monterosso has been facilitated by a different geographic situation, respect to Vernazza: indeed, the village is larger and this allowed a better outflow of the water.
Likely, not all the shops&activities have been damaged (shops, restaurant, hotel…)
The works are concentrated in the old part of the village (the new part didn’t suffer great damages) where water and phone lines have been restored in the past days and now the workmen are working on the drainage system.
We think that for the next month of April 2012, Monterosso will be able again to operate and receive tourists.
VERNAZZA:
Very different the scenery in Vernazza where the situation is still very difficult. The spaces are limited and there’s an only central street for the transit of people and vehicles; bulldozer excavate and move debris all day long.
The only space a bit wider is where there was the main square and the ex-marina area now covered for its 50% from a big pile of debris.
Now, there is still no road access to Vernazza: it’s possible to get there only by sea (if conditions are good) or by railway.
