This is so sad….We’re vistied twice in the past 4 yrs and Vernazza is one of our favaorite places we’ve seen. I hope they can recover so we can return one day. All the best to the residents for a speedy recovery.

  • I would like to post your photos on Rick Steves’ website. Please contact me. People need to see what has happened.

I was in Vernazza doing research just over 10 days ago. I see so many familiar sites – including the first floor of the wonderful hotel where I stayed (Albergo Barbara) in these images. If I can do anything to help by contributing to a fund to assist Vernazza and its beautiful people, please let me know.

Thank you Laura. It’s a very dramatic situation in Vernazza and Monterosso.
If you would like to help by contributing, has been opened a special bank account by the Municipality of Monterosso. This is the IBAN: IT64W0603049870000046275829.

We are Australian who spend Easter this year on the Cinque Terra. We stayed with the Scilian Pirate in Vernazza. Ate cannelloni at his fabulous restaurant. Stayed in La Spezia for 3 days. Also stayed on the beach in Monterosso del Mare. Glad we walked some of the paths.
    This is just so sad.

    Thanks Jenza for your comment.

We are in Rome now but were staying in Monterosso Tuesday when the heavy rain started. We left our hotel to spend the day touring at around 1:30pm. We were probably the last train to leave the station before the landslide hit. We ended up stranded in Rio Maggiore for hours before getting a train La Spezia where we had to spend the night. We were able to get on a supply boat the next morning back to Monterosso to find the town in complete ruins. My heart is broken for the people who live there as it will take a very long time for them to come back from this disaster. Vernazza was even worse, as our boat stopped there to deliver water and other much needed supplies. Please pray for the people in these two villages…they will need all the help they can get.

Thank you very much Mary for your comment. The situation is dramatic. If you have any media files (photo, video) and you’d like to publish them, post it on our facebook wall or send us them (denis@arbaspaa.com)

My husband and I visited the beautiful towns of Cinque Terre for the first time this past June on a Rick Steves tour. This was one of our most favorite places of all times. We are so very sad for these communities and send our love and prayers to all that have been hurt by the devastation.

  • […] 35,000 cubic meters of debris now needs to be removed from the main street in Vernazza – these photographs show the scale of the damage. The Navy have delivered a large bulldozer to help with the removal […]

This is so sad! Hopefully the winter won’t continue to devastate them. I intend on being there this summer for a month or more (a decision I made prior to all of this)…I will definitely be donating money and perhaps my time if there is still need when I arrive! Anyone know much about Save Vernazza or the best way to donate?

  • admin says:

Hi Sabrina, thanks for your message. The works to restore Vernazza and Monterosso are going on; the weather, luckily, in this last weeks has been good. We think that Monterosso will be ready for next Easter; Vernazza maybe for the next summer.
About SaveVernazza, if you would like to donate, that is the right way: it’s an association created by the Municipality of Vernazza.

This is so sad!! I read about this disaster on Rick Steves’ Facebook page. I am a speaker on a Cruise Ship and would like to know if I could use a couple of your photos in my presentations.

I already have a photograph of Vernazza in my photography presentation as it is a place I found beautiful…even in the rain. I would like to inform more people of your disaster and hopefully generate some support.

    Please advise.

    Best regards,
    Robyn

Hi Robyn, thank you for your message.
The situation here in Cinque Terre is good; Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore are ok, in Monterosso and Vernazza the works to restore the villages are going on.
Monterosso is coming back to its normality and we think that for next Spring and Easter (2012) the most of hotels, shops and activities will be available.
In Vernazza the situation is different because the village has been hardly damaged by the flood: by now it’s difficult to say when Vernazza will be ready for tourism again. Of course, we hope soon, maybe for next summer but it’s hard to say.

About your request: of course, you can use our pictures in your presentations, we have a lot of images here on our blog and on our Facebook official page (http://www.facebook.com/arbaspaa).

We’ve also a dramatic video about the flood on our Youtube channel
