What is the best outfit for an hiking during summer? And about the Cinque Terre, what is the best way to approach the trails? how to prepare before setting off?
The Cinque Terre are one of the most fascinating destinations for nature lovers and hikers, attracting millions of visitors every year. These picturesque villages, surrounded by breathtaking scenery, offer unique hiking trails that we have had the pleasure of exploring ourselves.
But how do you prepare for this summer adventure? Here are our suggestions for tackling the Cinque Terre trails with the right equipment, the result of our direct experience as hiking guides.
A common mistake is to underestimate the nature of the Cinque Terre trails, which, despite their beauty, are challenging and require proper preparation. Many visitors think they can tackle them as if they were simple walks, without the proper equipment, thus risking their own safety. It is important to remember that these paths, with their different levels and unevenness, require attention and respect.
Each path has its own level of difficulty and, depending on the weather, may be closed or inaccessible. Find out in advance with the help of maps or at an information centre in the Cinque Terre Park.
Always check the weather forecast, as it can be dangerous to walk in the rain.
If the weather is sunny, remember that the trails are rocky and often unshaded and can get very hot. Always bring a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water.

The trails require careful choice of equipment. Here are some handy tips:
The choice of footwear is fundamental:
Avoid flip-flops or shoes unsuitable for trekking.
Choose good quality trekking boots with good grip (e.g. Vibram soles).
Try them on at home if you have just bought them, do not wear them directly on the trail to avoid problems such as blisters and discomfort along the way.
Good brands include Merrell, Salomon and Scarpa.
Equally important, socks should be made of a material that protects against abrasions and blisters, and should be at least above the ankle.
Trousers: Versatility is key. Whether you prefer long trousers, leggings or Bermuda shorts, make sure they are lightweight, breathable and allow for freedom of movement. Consider the type of route you are taking to choose the most appropriate length to protect you from thorns and insect bites.
Shirts: Linen and cotton are cool and breathable fabrics, and we would never advise against them. On the other hand, technical fabrics offer unsurpassed dryness, which makes hiking even more comfortable. The disadvantage of technical fabrics is that they smell sooner than natural fabrics.
Even wool T-shirts, although it may sound strange to the untrained ear, offer a level of breathability and dryness that is difficult to achieve with other fabrics.
In your rucksack: Don’t forget a first aid kit, plenty of water, a light raincoat, fleece, energy snacks, hat, sunscreen and sunglasses.
A 30-litre rucksack should hold everything you need.
Also remember to bring good trekking poles; they can save your knees, given the uneven terrain of the Cinque Terre.
