There’s a common misconception that many have when thinking about the low season in the Cinque Terre: that restaurants and shops are closed. In the past, this might have been true, but things have changed. Many restaurants and shops have learned to alternate their schedules to ensure that services are always available, even during the less touristy months.
In all the villages and throughout the year, you will find restaurants open year-round, serving typical Ligurian dishes such as pesto alla genovese and fresh seafood. Even local and artisanal product shops often remain open, allowing you to purchase a souvenir of your trip or a special gift.
4. More and More Tours Available off-season
Another myth to debunk is that there are no tours available off-season. In reality, more and more operators are offering a variety of experiences even during the winter months, allowing you to discover the Cinque Terre in a different and fascinating way.
Here are some of the activities available even off-season:
Vineyard tours and wine tastings:
Recently available even in the low season, allowing you to discover the region’s food and wine culture year-round.
Pesto-making and Ligurian cooking classes:
These are ideal experiences for colder or rainy days, as they take place indoors, creating a cozy atmosphere.
E-bike excursions:
If you love adventure, an e-bike excursion allows you to explore the Cinque Terre from unique vantage points.
Kayaking:
On milder days, this activity is still available, and the sea is free from the summer crowd of boats and ferries. The view of the Cinque Terre from the sea is truly unmissable. All necessary gear is provided to keep you warm.

5. The Mediterranean Climate Can Be Wonderful
Another advantage of visiting the Cinque Terre off-season is the climate. Even in autumn or winter, temperatures can be surprisingly mild, thanks to the influence of the Mediterranean climate. There are often sunny days, ideal for walking outdoors and admiring the breathtaking views, without the oppressive summer heat.
And if you’re not particularly sensitive to the cold, you might even take a dip in the sea! In the cooler months, the water temperatures can still be pleasant enough for a swim. Naturally, there will also be colder or rainy days, but don’t worry: when it rains, there are always alternative destinations to explore.
The Cinque Terre are only 1 hour from Pisa, 1.5 hours from Florence, and 1.5 hours from Genoa, all cities rich in culture, art, and history.
And, if you arrive by car, you can explore the areas around the Cinque Terre, such as Lunigiana and Val di Vara, areas rich in food and wine traditions. Here in autumn you will find pumpkin, chestnut and mushroom festivals!
